Mulled wine isn’t just delicious, it also makes your cheap plonk go a long way and is less alcoholic than serving wine on its own, so is good for a winter party or just a long cozy night beside the fire.

Makes: approx 1.5 litres

750ml full bodied red wine
300ml orange juice
500ml water
Orange studded with 12 whole cloves
½ tsp mixed spice
2 cinnamon quills
150g sugar
Handful of cranberries – optional

In a large saucepan combine the wine, water and orange juice. Add the studded orange, mixed spice and cinnamon quills and heat gently till simmering.

Add the sugar and adjust to your taste. Keep the mulled wine on the stove on a very low setting and serve piping hot.

Make it at least an hour before you intend to serve it to let the flavours mellow. The slow cooker is ideal for keeping it hot without it evaporating.
